Smoke out the Lust

Smoke Out the Lust

First off WOW how much ads have NOT changed in the past 40 years. Above is a cigarette ad that was originally posted my Tipalet in 1969. It is so similar to ads today that play off of Lust does to women. You would think as women get more and more rights that this process to attract men to buy certain things would change, but it for sure has not and has maybe even gotten worse.

Focusing more into this ad in detail, it shows a man blowing his cigarette smoke into a woman's face. She is dressed in a white tank top that is low cut. This is trying to show her in a way that is highly sexualized. The background is a yellowish -orange that draws the attention of the reader but also sexualize it in a way because it has some red hints to it. The man is “turning her on” by the cigarette smoke. The ad is saying that the smoke is what the women want so men should smoke in order to get women. This is furthered by the words that appear on the ad, which state, “Blow in her face and she’ll follow you anywhere”. This is most applying to men because they are trying to show them how to get women.

This being said the main deadly sin shown in this ad is lust. It is sexualizing women and making men in a way think they “deserve” women. This being said they ad is showing that men should smoke so they can get women and have women “follow” them into bed. On top of that pride is also shown in this ad. It is showing a very prideful man who thinks he deserves the women and cigarettes just make that worse. The man is also in a suit which makes people think he has a white color job which shows he is more prideful then other men because he thinks h deserves more due to his money.

  1. I liked the ad that you chose! I thought that it was very intriguing and your discussion of it was interesting as well. I thought it was great to talk about the colors in the picture as well, though I think that you could've delved deeper into a big picture examination of the text by talking specifically about the layout, with the woman and the smoke making up the main part of the picture. I liked how you linked your discussion of this ad from the 1960s to the ones today, but I think that an example would help make your point a lot stronger! I thought that your connection to the deadly sins was well done. Overall, I really liked your post but I was sometimes thrown off with some grammatical errors and confusing sentences so proof reading will make your points stronger. Good job! P.S. the green highlighting with purple text did make the blog a bit difficult to read so you might want to consider that for next time!

  2. Hannah,
This ad is really interesting and I thought you did a great job with identifying the small details in it. Your explanation of the significance of the colors within the ad and the meaning of the words on the ad were good. Also, the way you described the importance of the cigarette smoke and what it represents is done very well. I do think that you could add more analysis of the how the small picture plays into the large picture of the advertisement. Your connection to the deadly sins of lust and pride is very strong. I enjoyed reading your blog post! Great job with it!
