TOO MUCH POWER

When is power a good thing and when is it a bad thing? Where is the line? When do people cross the line? How much responsibility comes with power? How do people decide how to use this power? haha yikes that’s a lot of question but when reading Macbeth a lot of them come up when seeing how his character changes. He goes from a almost timid man who allows his wife to weigh in on decisions with him to a man who even goes behind his wives back when making decisions. This all happens because he is given more and more power. When looking at the quote by Lord Acton “Power corrupts, and is absolute power corrupts absolutely.”, it is very true with Macbeth. When Macbeth hears from the 3 witches he is supposed to be king his deminer changed from then on. The most dramatic turn was after he killed King Duncan and became King himself. When Macbeth becomes King it is when he starts turning more corrupt. He starts to do whatever in his power to stay powerful, even if that means he does things that are wrong. He tries to get both Fleance and Banquo killed, even though Fleance does escape. Even after this death, he sends for Macduff’s family to be killed. When seeing how Shakespeare depicts Kings, who have power, it shows to what degree he agrees with the quote from Lord Acton. Shakespeare things that all Kings are corrupt and that is the reasoning behind him writing Macbeth. He was depicting King James throughout the play because he wants to show England just what is wrong with him. He can not directly say that because he does not want to be tried for treason. This play was a reason for him to get his feelings out about King James the first without being able to say exactly what he was thinking. In a way, Macbeth was on the allusion to how he felt about power and how the whole thing was corrupt in and of itself.  I saw a parallel from what Macbeth goes through to some examples in my own life.

When looking at the quote by Lord Acton it is still prevalent to this day. When power is given in today's life it is often abused in order to make life easier for themselves. One example in my life is how there are often captains of teams that take to much power because they think the can. Since they are captain they take charge of the team and sometimes take things to far. In these examples and in Macbeth I find the quote, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” by Lord Acton to be very true.

Translating and Differing

Lost in Translating so when taking foreign language classes we are always told not to use google translate because it is never exactly right and things are lost in translation. I don't know how much I really believed it until I got into higher levels and saw that what I was getting from one section was different then what someone else was getting if we tried to translate word for word. This idea is clearly shown when looking at the different translations of the same sentence in Metamorphosis. The sentences are trying to get the same point across but due to the different diction, syntax, and structure among others, the sentences do not mean the exact same thing to the reader.  The first translation reads "Gregory Samsa woke from uneasy dreams one morning to find himself changed into a giant bug." Smoke out the Lust

Smoke Out the Lust First off WOW how much ads have NOT changed in the past 40 years. Above is a cigarette ad that was originally posted my Tipalet in 1969. It is so similar to ads today that play off of Lust does to women. You would think as women get more and more rights that this process to attract men to buy certain things would change, but it for sure has not and has maybe even gotten worse. Focusing more into this ad in detail, it shows a man blowing his cigarette smoke into a woman's face. She is dressed in a white tank top that is low cut. This is trying to show her in a way that is highly sexualized. The background is a yellowish -orange that draws the attention of the reader but also sexualize it in a way because it has some red hints to it. The man is “turning her on” by the cigarette smoke. The ad is saying that the smoke is what the women want so men should smoke in order to get women. This is furthered by the words that appear on the ad, which state, “Blow ...
