Jekyll and Hyde

Dr. Jekyll vs. Mr. Hyde, just how mysterious are they?

"He is not easy to describe...and yet I really can name nothing out of the way" (Stevenson)

"To this rule... This is a matter that I thought we agreed to drop." (Stevenson)

When reading the open part of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde you began to discover how mysterious both the characters are. With the novella, the reader begins to compare the two men and analyze how they are described and presented to them. To do this, I looked at the quote about Hyde from chapter 1 and about Jekyll from chapter 6. Let's dive deeper into those quotes.

When reading this quote, the reader begins to understand how mysterious and scary that Hyde is. When Mr. Uttersonis describing him, he mentions how something has to be wrong with him, because of how scary he is. This shows and plays into the idea of the mystery of the novella and lets the reader see how Hyde will be throughout the book. It also shows how no one really knows why Hyde acts the way he does because it is very off. This differs greatly from how Jekyll is described in the quote that I chose to analyze.

With Jekyll, you can see how territorial he is. When Mr. Hyde is mentioned, he immediately wants the subject dropped. He is also talked about in 'kindness.' It also says, "I wish to see more of him." This shows that Jekyll is very mysterious and even though he is 'warm' and approachable people still have many questions about who he really is. Looking further into the quote the words, "doctor carried it off gaily" which shows that even if he does not like the subject and it is "distasteful" Dr. Jekyll does not want people on the outside to know that.

When looking at the two charters and quotes, the reader can see just how different they are. For example, Dr. Jekyll is portrayed as a much kinder person than Mr. Hyde. Also with the quotes, the reader is given information about me. Hyde directly, for example about how he walks, versus with Dr. Jekyll the reader has to infer how he feels because it is more mysterious. Another difference between the characters is that Dr. Jekyll is much more comfortable with Mr. Utterson then Mr. Hyde. A similarity between the two charters is that is both mysterious, and the reader does not truly understand what they are up to yet in the novel. With the similarities and differences, the reader can keep questioning what is going on but truly won't know till the end of the book.

Poem

My Poem takes place towards the end of the novella when Jekyll is thinking about whether to turn into Hyde again. It also takes place during the time that Jekyll kills himself and the situation surrounding that.

Both: What is in a bad person? What is a good person?
Hyde: Bring me back
Jekyll: You have hurt people
Hyde: You need me in you
Jekyll: I can not do that to everyone else
Hyde: But in the end, you can never get rid of me
Jekyll: I can try
Hyde: I am part of you
Jekyll: I will kill myself in order for you not to live
Hyde: It will never work
Both: And in the end there is both good and bad and people

  1. I like your post and how you talked about how Jekyll is territorial when it comes to Hyde, and therefore causes the reader to question their relationship with each other even more. I also like your poem and how you made it so that Jekyll and Hyde are speaking with each other.

  2. Hey Hannah, I really enjoyed the comments that you made about how Stevenson chose to withhold certain facts about each character. You established the motif with each quote which was really interesting. The only thing you could have done more with step one is developing the themes that you outlined further by explaining the significance to the message. For step 2, I found your poem to be strong in showing the difficulty Jekyll has in distinguishing himself from Hyde. Well-constructed post, Hannah.

  3. Hey Hannah, great poem. The contrasts in personalities between Jekyll and Hyde was extremely evident. I also enjoyed your analysis of the characters- especially the part about the motif of secrecy; however, in some of your other developments the analyses were basic. ttyl

  5. I really like the structure of your blog. Some of the analysis seemed surface level. I really like the duality you posed in the poem. Great post.
