When Kate Adams started her talk, she was giving a rundown of the storyline of a soap opera and how over exaggerated they are. She talks about how she worked in soap operas, until 2009 when CBS canceled her show, and how this process changed how she looked at life. She brings her own personal knowledge of soap operas to bring up valuable life lessons that you learn from them.
The first lesson is "surrender is not an option." Adams brings in how in soap operas there is no doubt, and the characters just go for things no matter what. The second lesson is "sacrifice your ego and drop the superiority complex." She brings up how we are not as important as we think we are and how we can always ask for help. The third lesson mentioned by Adam is "evolution is real." With this lesson, she brings up how in soap operas characters are supposed to change and grow and in life, you are supposed to do the same exact thing. The fourth and final lesson mentioned is, "resurrection is possible." When talking about this Adam brings in how a character of "Days in Our Lifes" died multiple times but kept coming back. She brings this into real life when talking about how anything is possible.
When trying to get her point across Kate Adams tends to switch to humor to keep her audience engaged. With this humor, she invokes ethos because she is trying to get people to see how they can improve their character. She mentions how she knows that soap operas are extremely over exaggerated but they can still teach valuable life lessons if you look at them with a big picture, Through this, she talks about how her own life went through the periods of life lessons, taught by soap operas. With this, she is trying to encourage her audience and show them there is always hope.
This Ted talk has to do with storytelling because Kate Adams is talking about how stories in soap operas are told. Her knowledge with this subject is very profound, and because of this, she is able to convince the audience that they can learn about life through the way soap operas are told.
I chose to watch this Ted Talk because I knew how over exaggerated soap operas were and was interested in how they had to do with storytelling because of the stories where always over the top.
